Chip Kelly is entering an unstable situation with the San Francisco 49ers, but has a chance to be an excellent hire.

After being unceremoniously fired as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles following Week 16 of the regular season, many expected Chip Kelly to land on his feet with another NFL job this offseason. That notion proved true a few weeks later, as Kelly was introduced as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday.

Kelly got off to a fast start in the NFL after being hired away from the Oregon Ducks prior to the 2013 season, leading the Eagles to back-to-back 10-win seasons, including a playoff appearance. That changed in 2015, as Kelly’s unique offense did not work nearly as well and Philadelphia went 6-9 before firing him.

Taking over control of personnel moves was Kelly’s downfall in Philadelphia, as a number of his moves last offseason backfired. Still, Kelly took over a poor team and lead it to a 26-21 record over three years, and San Francisco saw enough upside to take a chance on him.

San Francisco finished the year at 5-11 and fired first-year head coach Jim Tomsula. The 49ers lost a ton of talent last offseason and are potentially facing a long rebuilding process, so Kelly isn’t exactly walking into a stable situation.

In particular, it will be interesting to see how Kelly, general manager Trent Baalke and CEO Jed York interact with each other. York has gained a reputation of interfering with the 49ers’ on-field success, and was primarily responsible for running Jim Harbaugh out of town.

There are plenty of questions, and success may not come right away. Still, hiring Kelly has a chance to work out well for the 49ers.
