5 teams that won the MLB offseason
While a few key free agents are still on the board, these five teams have emerged as some of the winners of the MLB offseason.
After a wild start with the Winter Meetings, the MLB offseason has slowed down in recent weeks, even with a few key free agents still available.
This offseason’s free agent class was loaded with talent and figured to be very intriguing to watch over the winter months. In particular, the pitching class looked strong with a few front-line starters available, and the offseason did not disappoint early on with some huge contracts given out to stars.
As many expected, David Price joined the Boston Red Sox on a $217 million deal, which should help them towards contention again after back-to-back last place finishes. Much more surprising was the fact that the Arizona Diamondbacks landed Zack Greinke for a contract also in the $200 million range, making them a factor in the NL West for 2016 and beyond.
Hitters, other than Jason Heyward, have not quite had the same luck in free agency as those starters. Justin Upton and Yoenis Cespedes are among the sluggers still looking for suitors, while the qualifying offer system has hurt others like Dexter Fowler.
While those aforementioned teams made some flashy impact moves, they weren’t necessarily among the top winners of the MLB offseason. Other contenders like the Chicago Cubs signed multiple players who could potentially push them over the top, while rebuilding clubs like the Atlanta Braves did well to position themselves for the future.
With more to come, these five teams stand out as the winners of the MLB offseason.
