Chicago Cubs co-owner Todd Ricketts doesn’t like the New York Mets‘ fans or the Mets in general.
The Chicago Cubs and New York Mets are pretty similar teams. Both boast a ton of young talent and both teams came from out of nowhere to surprise everyone in baseball in 2015. The Cubs made it to the NLCS and fell to the New York Mets, who made it to the World Series and fell to the Kansas City Royals.
While it’s a great time to be a Cubs fan or in this case, the owner of the Cubs, Cubs co-owner Todd Ricketts is still not happy with the New York Mets and their fans.
After Ricketts gave praise to the behavior of the fans of the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals to CSN Chicago for their fans’ behavior in the playoffs, he didn’t have as many nice things to say about the Mets and the way they behaved in the playoffs.
#Cubs board member Todd Ricketts: "I don't know if you know this, but #Mets fans are really, really obnoxious."
— Patrick Mooney (@PJ_Mooney) January 16, 2016
Well no one should be surprised that someone called fans of a New York team obnoxious, but it comes off as sour grapes from Ricketts. New York teams have always had loud boisterous fans for years and the Mets are no different when it comes to being loud and boisterous.
However, Ricketts should know that while he may have had fun with the hospitality in other cities, New York is a whole different ballgame. Even worse for Ricketts, he didn’t stop there with his comments and really gave the Mets plenty of more bulletin board material for the next time the two sides meet and Ricketts is in attendance.
Even his wife doesn’t like the Mets or Matt Harvey according to the article.
"“My wife and I are sitting in our living room. It’s 10:30 at night. We’re in our pajamas. I don’t know if you guys remember — Matt Harvey refused to come out of the game.“He did a show on TV. He did his own little drama on TV to show that he was the tough guy and he was going to win this game for the Mets. He went back out on the mound — and I think three batters later the Royals had scored two runs.”The Royals would tie the game with Eric Hosmer’s heads-up hustle on a groundball, score five runs in the 12th inning and win their first World Series title since 1985.“When Hosmer’s left hand went across home plate,” Ricketts said, “my wife jumped up, pointed at the TV and she said: ‘Screw you, Matt Harvey! Screw you, Mets fans!’"
Well Ricketts guaranteed that whenever the Cubs visit New York to play the Mets next season, that the fans are going to be as humanly obnoxious as possible. The worst thing that one can do is rile up a fan base, especially a New York one that lives to make it a less-than-pleasant experience for visitors.
If that wasn’t bad enough, the story that Ricketts told about his wife and his insulting of Matt Harvey is all but to guarantee that Harvey is going to go out and give his best every single time that the Cubs play the Mets.
The Mets swept the Cubs handily in the playoffs last year and the Cubs have a lot of work to do in the future if they’re going to remain competitive with New York. Both teams have plenty of young talent and should be meeting in the playoffs for many years to come.
It looks like a young rivalry in baseball is being taken to the next level by Ricketts and his feelings for the Mets’ fans and the team in general.
