Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard debuted the video for his racial equality anthem ‘Bigger Than Us’ on MLK Day
Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard is most likely the most talented rapper in the entire NBA. While there are plenty of players who try their hands at the art-form and there always will be, Lillard has shown on numerous occasions and countless #4BarFridays that he simply has a talent for hip-hop. However, he made arguably his most important musical contribution on Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
Prior to TNT’s broadcast of their MLK Day slate of primetime games on Monday night and during Inside the NBA’s coverage, Lillard debuted the music video for his track “Bigger Than Us,” a song preaching and hoping for racial equality and harmony that really strikes a poignant emotional chord both through the song and with the visuals:
"Here’s the link to @Dame_Lillard‘s new music video that just premiered on TNT https://t.co/4qqRmXmBny— Travis J. Worsowicz (@jacksontravis) January 19, 2016"
From the moment that the news clips from the Ferguson, MO protests begin, it’s clear what Lillard’s message with the song is, but he does a beautiful job of not preaching a message of violence or hatred with his lyrics. Instead, he’s simply pleading for the world to love one another regardless of race or ethnicity and for everyone to peacefully coexist so that the senseless violence between races can end.
Whether or not you think Lillard can rap or whether or not he’s going to get a record deal, I think we can all agree that he’s preaching a message here that we should all get behind and it’s fitting to have him delivering it on MLK Day.
