Napoli looking to lock down Gonzalo Higuain
Despite rumors linking Gonzalo Higuain with a move away from the San Paolo, S.S.C. Napoli is looking to lock down their star striker for years to come.
It has been a fantastic season for both Gonzalo Higuain and Napoli. Not only is the club top of the table in the Italian top flight after 20 matches, but the Argentinean striker also has a remarkable 20 goals in 20 matches played. His latest two goals came in the Partenopei’s 3-1 victory over Sassuolo on Saturday.
The 28-year-old has become a hero in the Southern Italian city, forming a bond with the supporters that is quickly being compared to the legendary Diego Maradona, who led Napoli to their last Scudetto win back in 1990.
With success has come a plethora of rumors and speculation for El Pipita though, as many have begun to suggest that a summer move to Bayern Munich could be in the works. Carlo Ancelotti will be taking over for Pep Guardiola at the end of the season, and the Italian is said to be fond of Higuain.
However, multiple reports out of the peninsula have now emerged claiming that Napoli are looking to seal their star striker for years to come. According to both Tuttosport and La Repubblica, the club are making arrangements to extend Higuain’s contract past 2018, which would provide the Argentinean with an improved salary and raise his current €94 million buyout clause in the process.
Napoli will look to continue their run of fine form when they host Inter on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Coppa Italia. They will then travel to Genoa to take on Sampdoria in league competition on Sunday morning.
