The Seattle Seahawks are considering either releasing or trading running back Marshawn Lynch
The Seattle Seahawks and running back Marshawn Lynch have reached a point where both sides could benefit from parting company. The Seahawks are tight against the cap and would love to be rid of Lynch’s $9,000,000 salary for next season. They already have a cheaper and potentially better running back in Thomas Rawls, who did very well replacing Lynch while Lynch was injured.
Marshawn Lynch suffered multiple injuries during the 2015 regular season and was never himself. He only averaged 3.8 yards per carry, his lowest with the Seahawks. His three rushing touchdowns and 417 receiving yards in 2015 are also his lowest with the Seahawks. He missed nine games during the season due to injuries and was mostly a non-factor in the Seahawks playoff loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Lynch turns 30 years old in April. That’s the age when running backs tend to start declining. Lynch has already started declining due to his health. His cap hit in 2016 will be $11,500,000 and $12,500,000 in 2017. He is due a $2,500,000 signing bonus. If released, Lynch will have a dead cap hit of $5,000,000 in 2016 and $2,500,000 in 2017. He will save them $16,500,000 of cap space over 2016 and 2017 if he is released. He will save them $6,500,000 in 2016 and $10,000,000 in 2017.
