Report: Nationals interested in Yoenis Cespedes
The market for Yoenis Cespedes seems to be heating up with others off the board in free agency.
For most of the MLB offseason, the market for free agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes has been quiet. He’s been passed up for others like Alex Gordon, Jason Heyward and most recently, Justin Upton, who signed with the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.
There had been talk of the New York Mets looking to bring back the Cuban slugger, but they are facing competition from the Chicago White Sox.
However, could a division rival be in the mix?
According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Washington Nationals are pursuing Cespedes after losing out on Upton. They made an offer and while it’s lower than what Upton received, Washington is reportedly “intrigued” by Cespedes.
If the Nationals can sign Cespedes, it would be another hit towards the Mets. They lost second baseman Daniel Murphy earlier this offseason to DC on a three-year deal. Stealing away their top hitter would be icing on the cake as they look to overtake the Mets and win the NL East in the upcoming MLB season.
Cespedes being brought in would likely put him in center field with Jayson Werth and Bryce Harper manning the corners. The Nationals lost incumbent center fielder Denard Span to the San Francisco Giants earlier this month.
Yoenis Cespedes seems to be the next big thing left in the free agent pool. He should sign soon and could get a fair amount of money if a team is willing to pay for him.
