Former Liverpool legend and Sky Sports’ pundit Graeme Souness has said that Liverpool should target a defender in the January transfer window.
Liverpool are a team in great transition. Since the Rafa Benitez era there hasn’t much stability at the club with multiple managers having a crack at the job, including Roy Hodgson and Liverpool legend King Kenny Dalglish. Brendan Rodgers was the latest to try to establish some sanity at the club, but unfortunately his signings let him down.
The decisions that the Scottish manager made with the money that was brought in from Luis Suarez’s sale would ultimately cost him his job. Rodgers bought too many players that simply weren’t good enough and lost his job because of it. Now Jurgen Klopp has taken over the reigns and he must rejuvenate a squad that possesses a lot of dead wood.
He must sell a lot of the players that are currently at Anfield but must also improve by bringing in players from elsewhere. There is a clear need for another striker and perhaps a top class winger. However, ex-Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes that Klopp should focus on defense, something that has been the Achilles’ heel of this team for some time.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Souness stated:
"“The best teams have the best players. The biggest part of Klopp’s job will be to recruit the best players. There are several areas where he needs to strengthen. They leak bad goals and if you are doing that, it can affect your confidence right throughout the team. I think he will want to address that as a priority.”"
Souness is absolutely spot on here. While Martin Skrtel is a capable defender, he is far from top drawer, and his supporting cast is also not up to scratch. Dejan Lovren has struggled since his big money move from Southampton, while Kolo Toure is well past his best and Mamadou Sakho looks as though he is about to make a mistake at any moment.
It will be interesting to see whether Klopp agrees with Souness, and if he does, who he decides to spend his money on.
