Manchester United have sent scouts to watch Genoa’s Mattia Perin in action on Sunday.

Manchester United have struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson decided to call it quits. The David Moyes-era at Old Trafford was short lived and it doesn’t look like Louis van Gaal will last very much long either. The Red Devils lost 1-0 to Southampton at home on Saturday, and currently sit fifth in the Premier League table. They have just 37 points from 23 matches, and have already been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League.

As a result of their struggles, we could be seeing quite a bit of changes at the club, both on and off the pitch. Van Gaal’s future remains unclear, and the team could be looking to overhaul its roster when he goes.

On Saturday, reports began to emerge across Italy that Manchester United have sent scouts to Verona to watch a match between Hellas Verona and Genoa. Sky Sport Italia claims the English giants are very interested in Genoa’s goalkeeper, Mattia Perin, and wanted to get a closer look at the player.

Perin is just 23-years-old and has been dubbed by many as the heir to Gianluigi Buffon’s throne with the Italian national team. Despite still being in his early twenties, the youngster has already featured in more than 100 games in the Italian top flight.

With Manchester United sending scouts to keep an eye on a young goalkeeping sensation, one has to wonder about the future of David de Gea. It is no secret that Real Madrid have long been interested in the Spanish international, and the Red Devils may already been looking for his replacement.

Genoa take on Hellas Verona from the Stadio Bentegodi at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday morning.
