Stan Van Gundy: Cavaliers front office is ‘crazy’ for firing David Blatt
Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy ripped into the Cleveland Cavaliers organization for firing David Blatt.
The Cleveland Cavaliers shocked everyone on Friday, when they announced that they had fired head coach David Blatt. Blatt was coming off a season where he coached to the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals and when he was fired, the Cavaliers had the best record in the Eastern Conference.
After Blatt was fired and replaced by assistant Tyronn Lue, many coaches around the league began showing support for Blatt. Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle wasn’t happy and said the Cavaliers firing Blatt was absolutely embarrassing for the league. Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy agrees with Carlisle and during an interview with the Detroit Free Press, ripped into the Cavaliers for firing Blatt as well.
"“It’s absurd and I agree with Rick Carlisle,” Van Gundy said, via the Detroit Free Press‘ Vincent Ellis. “It’s embarrassing for the league.”Van Gundy added, “That one to me elevated all of the coach firings totally into the theater of the absurd.”The Pistons coach said he texted with Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and Charlotte Hornets coach Steve Clifford.“We have jobs, maybe, because our front offices aren’t quite as crazy as theirs, but that’s about it,” Van Gundy said."
Van Gundy’s statements echo many coaches and players around the league. While it’s certainly not too shocking of a move, considering the fact that it always seemed like the Cavaliers and Blatt were on shaky ground with each other, the move to fire him came at a bizarre time.
Long gone are the days of a coach getting four or five years with a team. It’s an immediate results league and although the Cavaliers produced results, the organization didn’t feel they were good enough for Blatt to keep his job.
That’s why Van Gundy and the rest of the coaches around the league find the Cavaliers’ decision crazy.
