According to various reports, Manchester United are looking to make a move for Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann.
Manchester United have struggled to score goals since Louis van Gaal arrived last season, and the team failed to score again on the weekend, losing 1-0 to Southampton. The Red Devils looked lackluster throughout the match and like we’ve seen so many times this year, couldn’t create much in front of goal.
As a results of their issues finding the back of the net, the club are looking to bring in reinforcements to help bolster their squad. According to various reports from both sides of the pond including ESPN FC and the Manchester Evening, Manchester United are considering making a move for Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann.
The aforementioned report suggests that the Premier League giants are eager to bring the 24-year-old to Old Trafford, but with Atletico facing the potential of a one-year transfer ban pending an appeal, a move could be a difficult one to orchestrate. On Monday, Griezmann also went to the media to profess his love for his current club.
“I’m happy at Atletico Madrid,” he told Telefoot, via Football-Espana.
“I’m ambitious and I want to win trophies here.
“This is a great club and my aim is to win trophies with Atletico.
“[On France’s chances at Euro 2016], I hope to see Benzema and Valbuena at the tournament.
“If they don’t make it then we have [Olivier] Giroud and [Kevin] Gameiro, who are also important.”
Atletico currently sit level with Barcelona on points atop the La Liga table, but have played one more match. They will certainly not want to lose one of their biggest stars in the midst of a title race, especially with the knowledge that they may not be able to immediately replace the striker.
Griezmann has 18 goals and three assists in 28 matches in all competitions so far this season, and has become a regular for the French national team.
Atletico Madrid will be in action next on Wednesday, when they host Celta Viga in the second leg of their Copa del Rey battle.
