The Boston Bruins are likely going to trade forward Loui Eriksson for a young defenseman

The Boston Bruins have done remarkably well this season thanks to their offense. However, their defense has been poor and the Bruins don’t have many in-house options for upgrades. The Bruins are looking to fix their blue line woes on the trade market. One asset who could help them get a young defenseman is forward Loui Eriksson, who will be a free agent after this season.

The Bruins would like to re-sign Eriksson because he is a perfect fit for their offense. He has 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points this season for the Bruins in 48 games. He is reportedly asking for a hefty salary of at least $5,000,000 and wants at least four years. If the Bruins can’t work something out, it’s likely that he could be traded.

From CSN New England:

"According to a source, executive director of player personnel John Ferguson Jr. was at the Sharks-Wild game last Saturday. Minnesota’s Jonas Brodin, Marco Scandella and Matthew Dumba all fit the profile of the type of young, improving defensemen the Bruins are seeking in trade, and the Wild need to add a talented offensive winger like Eriksson as they battle for a playoff spot in the West."

The Wild need someone like Loui Eriksson and the Bruins need someone like Dumba or Scandella if they’re going to make any noise in the playoffs. As great as Eriksson is, the Bruins might be better off trading him for Dumba or Scandella. They could potentially re-sign him in the off-season even if they trade him.

According to CSN New England, the Ducks are another fit because they have a surplus of young defensemen. Sami Vatanen would be a perfect fit for the Bruins and the Ducks could certainly use a wing of Loui Eriksson’s caliber.

The Bruins are facing a tough decision. Do they keep Eriksson and try to win now? Or do they build for the future by getting a young defenseman?
