Newcastle United: Kieran Gibbs

Kieran Gibbs is one of the most underrated players in the Premier League. While Nacho Monreal has been terrific this season for Arsenal, creating one of the best full back pairings in the league with Hector Bellerin, Gibbs has had to settle for the last 10 minutes of the game, playing on the left-wing to close out the game. It is definitely not the role he was dreaming as a kid.

Regular first team football, playing at his natural left back position could be something that could prize Gibbs away from his boyhood club. He is an Arsenal boy through and through, but his career is not fulfilling his top class potential due to the form of Monreal. The lack of game time is hurting his career on an international stage as well as club level, and this is something that Newcastle could offer the full back.

The North East club are in a relegation dogfight and are scrapping to stay alive in the top-tier of English football. Down at the bottom of the league, clean sheets are like gold dust. A solid defense is crucial down at the bottom and Newcastle’s is particularly leaky, conceding 41 goals so far this season, the third worst in the league. Many of the issues have come from the left back position. Newcastle have to play Paul Dummet there, and Gibbs would be a significant improvement at a position of need.
