Cleveland Browns legend Jim Brown stated that he doesn’t want Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel to be traded
The situation for Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is just as uncertain as ever at the end of his 2015 season. Through his various antics that saw him benched on numerous occasions throughout the year, his future with the organization is clearly in question. Rumblings around the league that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is ready to either trade or outright release Manziel only further that uncertainty.
However, at least one important person in regards to the Browns organization is in favor of keeping Manziel on the team: legendary running back Jim Brown. Speaking on the manner on Thursday at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards, Brown stated that he doesn’t want Johnny Football to be traded. He continued to say that he “liked” Manziel and felt that trading a young, troubled player isn’t going to help the Browns or Manziel, per Tom Reed of Cleveland.com.
Perhaps the most important part of what Brown had to say concerning Manziel came as he carried on, though. Brown went onto say that perhaps the issue was how leadership in Cleveland has handled the young quarterback and his development as a player and man. Brown noted that there are some “kids” who have unique personalities and that teams can “lose them” if they aren’t dealt with properly. All of that was to say that Johnny Manziel is that type of player and young man in the NFL.
Whether or not Brown’s opinion holds any clout to the Browns front office remains to be seen, but it’s certainly an interesting opinion on the matter to see someone with ties to the organization being committal on his position that goes against the reported position of the franchise. We’ll just have to wait and see if Manziel’s future winds up going the way Brown hopes it does or in another direction entirely this offseason.
