Phil Mickelson continues to use magic, this time with the toe of his hybrid to play a ridiculous shot.
Phil Mickelson is a who guy has magic, but often that is not a good thing. That applies here. Mickelson found himself in a rough spot during his second round at Torrey Pines on Friday, while playing in the Farmers Insurance Open.
In the most Mickelson of ways, lefty sliced his second shot on the par-5 18th of the North Course. This was Phil’s ninth hole of the day. Upon the ball landing, Phil found his ball resting against a fence. Mickelson wisely called a rules official to check if the ball was in bounds, making it playable. Upon conformation of the ball being in bounds –dubbed to be in play by a single dimple– Mickelson used his magic to get the ball back in play.
The toe of his hybrid was used to make surprisingly decent contact with the ball, sending into a bunker a few yards up the fairway. All of this was done calmly and coolly from the asphalt on the other side of the fence.
Unfortunately for Phil, his ability to find ways to play ridiculous shots in ridiculous lies ran out here, leading to a three putt on the green and a bogey on the score card. The bogey dropped Mickelson to 1-under for the tournament.
Remember, it is often better to be lucky rather than good.
