6. Kevin Hogan – Stanford
He’s not Andrew Luck, but this Cardinal signal caller still has a bright future at the next level. Scouts might fall into the trap of naturally comparing him to his predecessor, but that’s the wrong way to evaluate Hogan.
Instead, you have to judge him entirely on his own merits. At 6-4, 220 pounds he’s got the ideal size and look to play quarterback in the NFL. The difficulty in judging Hogan was his inconsistency in college.
Some days he looked like a guy who should be a first or second round pick. In games where he wasn’t playing well, he looked like a late-round flier. I think better offensive coaching can improve his consistency and elevate his sometimes-average performances .
If that happens, you’ve got a player who can be an above-average NFL starter. Hogan had the benefit of playing in an NFL system at Stanford so his learning curve from the playbook/terminology side should be pretty short. His game will need some tweaks, but he comes in pretty far along in his development.
The team that takes Hogan will be getting a bright player who has the physical gifts to succeed in the NFL and produced most of the time for his college team. That sounds like a good combination for a successful NFL quarterback.
