The Detroit Lions have hired former Miami Hurricanes head coach Al Golden as their new tight ends coach.

There’s been a lot of news surrounding the Detroit Lions the last couple of days. After wide receiver Calvin Johnson reportedly told the team that he was retiring, the Lions jumped to the forefront of NFL news that wasn’t regarding the Super Bowl.

Now the Lions are making non-Super Bowl headlines again as they hire former Miami Hurricanes head coach Al Golden. The Lions are bringing in Golden to coach the tight ends on the roster.

During his time in Miami, Golden had some talented tight ends on his teams and the Lions believe in him enough to get the most out of Eric Ebron and the rest of the tight ends on the roster. Without Calvin Johnson on the roster, other players are going to have to step up and help out quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Golden was a notable figure and well liked in the Miami community. Despite the fact the team couldn’t return to prominence under him, Golden was always there for his players and was well respected by everyone. While it seemed like the obvious move would be for him to stay in college, it will now be interesting to see how he progresses as a coach at the next level.

The Lions are in the process of trying to fix the franchise and are sticking with head coach Jim Caldwell. The team hired Bob Quinn to be the new general manager and the organization has been making a variety of moves in the front office and the coaching staff.

No word on whether or not Golden will wear a tie on the sidelines in Detroit.
