The Phoenix Suns have named assistant coach Earl Watson as interim head coach for the rest of the season.

After an abysmal January that saw the Phoenix Suns plummet toward the bottom of the NBA, the Phoenix Suns fired head coach Jeff Hornacek.

While the team will be looking for a new head coach to lead the franchise to prominence after the season, the Suns needed to hire an interim to finish out the season.

On Monday, Marc J. Spears reported that the Suns were promoting assistant coach Earl Watson to interim head coach.

The Suns brought Watson in during the offseason as they pursued free agent forward LaMarcus Aldridge. Watson then spent time on the Suns’ coaching staff and was promoted to the bench after the Suns fired assistants Mike Longabardi and Jerry Sichting.

Watson has always been seen as a bright mind that has the respect of peers and he was always one of the most respected guys on the teams that he played for during his career.

While the Suns aren’t expected to start winning now that they fired Hornacek, Watson will get his chance to get some experience as a head coach and ride out the year as the Suns aim for a high pick in the draft.
