Super Bowl 50: Broncos storylines
What to watch for in Super Bowl 50 from the Denver Broncos.
The Denver Broncos are coming into the Super Bowl with hopes of sending out an all-time great on top. Without question, the story of Peyton Manning has dominated the storylines in Santa Clara, Calif., with legions of people believing that this is Manning’s last game in an NFL uniform. At 39 years old, that might be best for his legacy and health.
Denver finished the regular season at 12-4 and beat both the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots to reach Super Bowl 50. The Broncos have enjoyed the NFL’s top-ranked defense, which has flourished under the guidance of defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Denver has relied heavily on its pass-rush, which led the league in sacks behind Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware.
So what are the main headlines? Let’s take a look:
1. Manning’s legacy
Peyton Manning is likely retiring after this contest, one way or the other. Of he wins, he will always have that iconic moment of walking off the field as a champion, much like Denver’s general manager and former Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway did. Manning also would have a second championship, instead of losing in each of his final three Super Bowl appearances.
2. DeMarcus Ware
Ware is another player to start thinking about his legacy. Ware is likely going to be released after this season with Denver having to make significant cuts to save salary for other, younger players. At 33 years old (and 34 in July) Ware is nearing the end of his road. If Ware wins the Super Bowl, is this his last game? If so, Ware will likely find himself in Canton after amassing 134.5 sacks in 11 seasons.
3. Can they stop Cam?
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is going to win the Most Valuable Player award. Can Denver find a way to contain a player who accounted for more than 70 percent of Carolina’s offense and threw for 35 touchdowns, while rushing for another 10? The Broncos have to keep Newton in the pocket and then blanket tight end Greg Olsen.
