5. Seattle Seahawks: Super Bowl XLVIII

The Denver Broncos finished 13-3 for the second straight season with Peyton Manning at the helm after he set NFL records with his 55 touchdown passes and 5,477 yards through the air. The team was one of the best offenses ever and looked unstoppable after falling short of the title game the season before.

The Seattle Seahawks were also 13-3, but built that record on a tough defense and running game featuring Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch. Head coach Pete Carroll did a great job getting his team this far, but being led by a second year quarterback, Russell Wilson, who was picked in the third round, there was no way anyone truly thought they could win.

It wasn’t long into the game before people realized how wrong that thinking was as the vicious Seattle defense hit the Broncos early and often and the finesse offense looked rattled from the start.

The Seahawks took a 22-0 lead into halftime thanks in large part to two interceptions off the arm of Manning. They went up by as much as 36-0 and eventually won by a score of 43-8. Linebacker Malcolm Smith was one of the studs of that defense and won the MVP for his 69-yard interception return, fumble recovery and nine tackles.

Seattle would head to the Super Bowl the following year, only to lose to the Patriots, but they still proved that they were no fluke and need to be taken seriously.
