The likely NFL MVP faces a difficult challenge when he leads the Carolina Panthers against an excellent Denver Broncos defense in Super Bowl 50.

Despite a successful first three years in the NFL after being selected first overall in the 2012 draft, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton still had plenty of critics entering 2015. This season has been all about silencing them.

Newton elevated his game to a different level this season, completing over 60 percent of his passes for over 3,800 yards and 35 touchdowns, adding another 10 scores on the ground. That helped lead the Panthers to a remarkable 15-1 and berth in Super Bowl 50 to take on the Denver Broncos Feb. 7 in Santa Clara.

That performance will almost certainly earn Newton NFL MVP honors, but some are still not confident that he has what it takes to win a Super Bowl. Denver’s outstanding defense clobbered Tom Brady in the AFC Championship Game and has both the pass rush and secondary to challenge Carolina.

However, Newton has more than proved himself this season, and is capable of beating the NFL’s best defense on the biggest stage. Newton’s unique physical traits and skill set will be just as much of a challenge for Denver, leading to an intriguing matchup when the Panthers have the ball.

Everyone knows what kind of damage Newton can do with his legs, and he’s simply too powerful to stop in goal line and short yardage situations. Still, it’s going to take much more than that to move the ball against the Broncos.

By accomplishing a few things that he is absolutely capable of, Newton can ensure that the Panthers take home their first Lombardi Trophy.
