2. Be successful from the pocket

Newton is a dynamic threat on the ground and his legs will definitely be a factor in the Super Bowl, particularly in goal line situations. However, Newton may have more trouble generating plays on the ground against Denver than in previous games.

The Broncos have the speed and ability in the front seven to limit the effectiveness of Newton’s mobility. Beyond the pass rush, Denver features a strong group of linebackers, and Brandon Marshall could be utilized as a spy against Newton.

Like so many other mobile quarterbacks, Newton has often been doubted in his ability to pass from the pocket. Newton has all but shattered that criticism with his play this year, but it’s still something he needs to do well on Feb. 7 to take home the title.

The Broncos are sure to game plan around stopping Newton from beating them on the ground and will design coverages to ensure that he doesn’t have any escape lanes. Carolina’s offense offers many unique looks while being built around Newton’s abilities, and it may have some trouble with the zone-reads and designed quarterback runs that have been so successful this year due to Denver’s athleticism and ability up front.

Carolina doesn’t need to change its offense of course, but Newton could find himself in more pocket passing situations than usual against the Broncos. The pressure that Newton will likely face in those situations is a challenge that he will need to meet for the Panthers to win.
