3. Atlético Madrid

At its highest level, European football resembles a game of musical chairs. The best managers go to the best clubs until such time as they get a better offer — or under-perform enough to get released — and then the whole drama starts again.

Which means that when it comes time for Chelsea to decide who will step in to replace caretaker manager Guus Hiddink in the summer, there are only so many options available. Rumors have circulated linking former Juventus manager and current Italian national team coach Antonio Conte with Stamford Bridge, but there might be an even better candidate: Atlético Madrid’s Diego Simeone.

The Argentine manager doesn’t get nearly enough credit for the dramatic transformation he’s overseen at Atlético. Despite their relatively meager resources and lack of legitimate stars, they managed to win La Liga and make an appearance in the Champions League final in 2013/14. After a minor dip in form last season, they’re back to being at their level best, competing with Barcelona for the rights to La Liga’s top spot.

So it’s understandable why Chelsea would want him. And why Atlético might be interested in Mourinho.

Though “The Special One” is not necessarily used to working without a large transfer fund, the tactics and style of play Simeone utilized at Atlético are largely in line with those of Mourinho. He could step into the role with the players the club already has and likely thrive. It’s no surprise that rumors of such a swap already existed prior to Mourinho’s sacking.
