When does NFL free agency start?
By Phil Naegely
NFL free agency begins March 9 at 4:00 p.m. EST
Super Bowl 50 will be here before we know it and one team will come away victorious. After it ends, the offseason officially begins. All 32 teams will be heading into overdrive as they start preparing for the 2016 season. This year’s unrestricted free agency will begin at 4:00 pm on March 9.
March 9 will be a big day for teams looking to make a splash in the opening hours of free agency. It’s important to note that this period of free agency is for unrestricted free agents. Basically, players are free to sign with any team and their past employer has no chance to match another offer on the table.
It will be a busy few days leading up to the opening of free agency as their is a three-day legal tampering period for teams to negotiate with players and their agents.
The opening bell of Free Agency is as highly anticipated as the NFL Draft. Each year big name players collect bonuses and strike rich with new contracts whether with their old team or in new surroundings.
This year should be no different as teams will want to fill needs quickly. Teams with new coaches can begin offseason workouts on April 4, while returning head coaches can begin offseason workouts on April 18.
Once Super Bowl 50 comes to an end, every NFL team will be working long and hard to figure out team needs and possible players to pick up in free agency. 4:00 pm on March 9 will be here before NFL teams know it.
