Super Bowl power rankings: Which winner is the greatest?
39. 1990 New York Giants (SB XXV)
In terms of all-time great coaching staffs, the 1990 New York Giants were a monster. Bill Parcells was the head coach, with the likes of Bill Belichick, Tom Coughlin, Romeo Crennel, and Al Groh all serving in roles under him. Perhaps that’s the reason why the Giants probably played a bit over their heads and were a bit more successful than you might’ve expected just looking at the stats.
Phil Simms and the offense were decidedly average on the year as they ranked just 15th in the NFL in terms of scoring at 20.9 points per game. Their defense undoubtedly made up for any shortcomings on offense, though, as they were the best unit in the league in allowing 13.2 points per game. That was good enough for the Giants to finish the regular season at 13-3 before entering the postseason where they found themselves fighting in a big way in at least two of their three playoff games.
They beat the Bears handily in the Divisional Round, but just narrowly edged out the 49ers in the NFC title game 15-13. They then needed Scott Norwood to kick one of the most brutal missed field goals in NFL history for the Bills in the Super Bowl to get their championship. Even if the Giants defense was dominant under Parcells and Belichick, that they needed an all-time blunder to win their title isn’t exactly flattering of the team as a whole.
