30. 1987 Washington Redskins (SB XXII)

The 1987 Washington Redskins are one of the most curiously constructed teams that you are going to find in these rankings. After all, backup quarterback Doug Williams started only two games in the regular season before having to step up in the postseason and becoming the first African-American quarterback to start in the Super Bowl.

Despite the lack of star power and strange circumstances for the 1987 Redskins under Joe Gibbs, they were still able to put forth an impressive overall performance. Washington averaged 25.3 points per game on the season, which rated them as the No. 4 scoring defense in the country. Moreover, the Redskins defense allowed a solid 19 points per game, good enough to make them the No. 6-ranked defense in the league on their way to an impressive 11-4 record on the regular season.

Interestingly enough, Washington had to fight hard to get out of the NFC once they got into the playoffs. The Redskins won their first two outings of the postseason by only a combined 11 points. Once they got to the big game against the Denver Broncos, though, Gibbs’ team unleashed absolute fury on their opponents as they won the contest 42-10. Though they may not have the star power of other teams, they were undoubtedly impressive.
