Another NBA head coach has bit the dust, as Derek Fisher has finally been fired by the New York Knicks.
So far this season, the NBA has once again proven to be a brutal killing field when it comes to head coaches surviving tumultuous times. Already teams like the contending Cavaliers and the lowly Suns have fired their head coaches, which once again shows being an NBA head coach is one of the worst jobs to feel secure about.
Derek Fisher is the latest example of that.
On Monday, the Knicks announced that Fisher had been fired after allowing the team to stall following a decent start to the year.
The firing of Fisher isn’t that surprising, as he seemed to be the second-best option for Phil Jackson after he got burned by Steve Kerr. The team is young and has a star of the future in Kristaps Porzingis who needs to be developed the right way. The guy to do that was never going to be Fisher, as the Knicks are a big market team that needs a big name head coach to lead the franchise.
Perhaps this is where Tom Thibodeau lands — or perhaps Luke Walton gets a job in New York after this season is over. The rumors about Phil Jackson coming back to coach will run rampant but let’s not get too excited about that. All that matters right now is that the Knicks kind of finally had something good going for them and they’ve found a way to characteristically make happiness and some semblance of success more complicated than we thought it could be.
