Michael Jordan gives the okay on the ‘Crying Jordan’ meme
By Andy Erk
Michael Jordan is okay with “Crying Jordan” memes.
The go-to internet humor these days is undoubtedly memes. The source of so many of these memes as of late, though? Michael Jordan, the all-time NBA great and his crying face from his Basketball Hall of Fame induction speech.
The MJ face is now an internet staple. One can’t find a notable moment anymore without a “Crying Jordan” face popping up somewhere. Unsure of what the Jordan meme is? Cam Newton, the Carolina Panthers starting quarterback, is a prime example after losing to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.

Jordan is a notoriously strict, tough that guy that generally doesn’t appreciate his likeness to be used in any way without prior consent from Jordan and his team. Surprisingly, Jordan and his management team have no problems with the Jordan meme game.
According to TMZ Sports, Jordan’s representatives offered that it is okay because, “everyone seems to be having fun with the meme.”
In keeping with his normal mantra, however, Jordan’s reps are keeping a close eye on the meme situation to be sure that this doesn’t stretch to into something that requires action to be taken.
What has driven Jordan to such stringent protection of likeness? His ability to build an empire from merely his name, an earned right. Especially when so many people are trying to use Jordan’s likeness to make a quick buck.
Just last August, according to the Chicago Tribune, Jordan was awarded $8.9 million when a supermarket chain used his likeness without permission.
“It is my name, and ive worked hard for it for 30-something years, and I’m not just going to let someone take it,” says Jordan.
The fun times on the internet are a go, for now. Keep up the crying Jordan love, internet. The world loves it.
