With Kevin Durant’s free agency looming, he should decide to take his talents to Los Angeles.

For the past few years, NBA star Kevin Durant’s free agent status has been discussed. Talking about this a few off-seasons in advance has become the norm in the NBA with teams constantly looking ahead at the next free agent class that could be three years away.

Much like LeBron James in 2010, Durant’s free agency has been a hot topic of conversation. He has made the NBA Finals once with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but failing to actually win the Larry O’Brien Trophy has caused speculation to stir up. The Texas alumnus hasn’t exactly affirmed his commitment to OKC beyond this season, either, leading to some thinking he could bolt for greener pastures somewhere else.

One possible landing spot for Durant is the Los Angeles Lakers. Their long-time star Kobe Bryant is set to retire once the 2015-16 NBA season ends. His skills have diminished over the years due to age and injury, so he is calling it a career.

The Lakers have always been headlined by a star and could look to sign one of the league’s best scorers in the 27-year-old. They have seemingly always been led by a huge name, going all the way back to the 1950’s when George Mikan captained the Minneapolis Lakers as the team’s center. Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal and others have followed in that path.

With this in mind, here are five reasons why Durant should be next in line in the group of superstars and sign with the Lakers this summer.
