NHL Rumors: Sharks exploring trade market for backup goalie
The San Jose Sharks are reportedly exploring the trade market to find a better backup goaltender
The San Jose Sharks have had some goaltending issues. Part of them have been because starter Martin Jones has never been a starting goalie in the NHL before this season. He has adjusted relatively well. While he has not been elite, he has certainly been far from a liability.
The major issue has been backup goaltender Alex Stalock. He has allowed 2.94 goals per game this season with a mediocre save percentage of .884. San Jose is reportedly exploring options for an upgrade as far as their backup goaltender. Head coach Pete DeBoer gave Stalock a dread vote of confidence while also hinting that Stalock could be on his way out.
"“My trust level’s good,” DeBoer said, via San Jose Mercury News. “You can see how important [Stalock] is to the group, how hard they play for him. If it’s another 20 games before [Stalock] plays again, or if it’s another two, he’s got to be ready and get the job done for us.”"
There are several backup goalie options available on the trade market. The Sharks could pursue Karri Ramo in Calgary if the Flames are truly interested in becoming sellers. They could also pursue Jonathan Bernier of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Anaheim Ducks have two goaltenders in Frederik Andersen and Anton Khudobin who San Jose could explore trading for as well.
Regardless, San Jose is trying for one of the three top spots in the Pacific Division and should something happen to Jones, the team would be in dire straights. The Sharks must string together a few wins to keep postseason dreams dancing, and getting a solid backup goaltender would be a nice start.
