After a great comeback season, Matt Harvey recently stated he would consider a long-term deal with the Mets
New York Mets right-handed pitcher Matt Harvey recently announced that he would not rule out a long-term extension with the team. The Mets have him under contract through the 2018 season. Harvey will also be 30 years old when free agency looms in 2019. In regards to a possible extension, Harvey spoke to ESPN.com and stated:
"“I think whatever comes up is going to come up. I’ve never shied away from it. I’ve never said I wouldn’t consider it. But I haven’t heard anything considering that.”"
“The Dark Knight” had a comeback story for the ages. The 26-year old came back from Tommy John surgery this past season and dominated the league. Harvey went 13-8 with a 2.71 ERA to earn himself the Comeback Player of the Year award. Including the playoffs, Harvey pitched 216 innings, the most of anyone coming back from Tommy John surgery. His outing in Game 5 of the World Series was fantastic until the end, when he couldn’t finish off the ninth inning.
Unfortunately, the Mets will have to deal with his agent Scott Boras again. Boras stirred some controversy during the end of last season. Communication is key in making deals, and Boras was not communicating in regards to his ideal plan for Harvey and his inning limits. Boras also spoke to ESPN in regards to an extension and stated:
"“Expectations of an extension are like dinner invitations. They are always politely considered until you know the restaurant.”"
Wherever there is controversy (and cash), Boras will follow. It has been rumored that Harvey has been connected to the Yankees when he becomes a free agent, among other teams. With a promising future thanks to young pitchers like Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz and a returning Zach Wheeler, Harvey’s time in Flushing could be memorable if he stays with that rotation.
