According to a report, Channing Frye had agreed to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014, unitl LeBron James returned.
In what was a rather dull NBA Trade Deadline, the Cleveland Cavaliers made one of the biggest moves of the day, when they acquired Channing Frye to the roster. With the addition of Frye, the Cavaliers have another front court threat that can space the floor and knock down open looks from deep.
While it’s a big addition to Cleveland’s roster, the Cavaliers almost had Frye back in 2014. According to Cavaliers beat writer Chris B. Haynes, Frye had agreed to sign with the Cavaliers in 2014, but LeBron James then decided to return to the Cavaliers, which took up all the space that they had in place to sign Frye.
Griffin said Channing Frye agreed to sign with #Cavs in summer of 2014, but then LeBron James announced he was returning and ran out of cap.

Obviously, the Cavaliers made the right choice by using the money on James, but now the team has both players after all and the Cavaliers are even deeper than before. Frye is versatile enough to play either position in the front court and he gives the team more flexibility with their lineups.
Had Frye signed with the Cavaliers in 2014, things would have looked a little different roster wise and David Blatt might still be the head coach of what would have been a young team. Instead, things took a turn for the better and the Cavaliers are primed to make another run at the NBA Finals.
