This season has certainly not going according to Galatasaray’s plan. The perennial Turkish powerhouse sits in 5th place, a whole 15 points behind league leading Fenerbahce. However, that lack of good position is not for a want of goals. 44 goals on the season puts them at second in the league, with Lukas Podolski and Burak Yilmaz taking an even split of 18 goals. They can score with the best of them.

What they cannot do is defend. Galatasaray have surrendered 29 goals to couple with their mass of goal production and with a defense like that, it makese sense why they were dumpedearly from a Champions League group that contained Atletico Madrid and Benfica.

Lazio is in a very similar position to their Turkish opposition. They sit well below where they had hoped to be this year, ranking in at seventh on the Serie A table. They have produced a good enough amount of goals (34) but their defense has allowed just as many to hit the back of their own net.

Lazio has had a bit of a struggle when playing away from home this year, as in the past five matches alone they have outscored opposition 9-5 at home, but they’ve drawn 0-0 in both away games against lower-tier sides Genoa and Udinese. Overall, they have outscored opponents 23-11 at home but face a similar line, 13-21 when visiting.

With the first leg in an ever-hostile Turkey, Lazio will hope to keep the damage limited.
