Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien blasted star defenseman P.K. Subban after a rough loss to the Colorado Avalanche

The Montreal Canadiens continued their nightmare season on Wednesday night against the Colorado Avalanche. It was an upsetting 3-2 loss in yet another game that was winnable for Montreal but they couldn’t get it done. A turning point in the game occurred when Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban committed a costly turnover that led to the deciding goal in the game. Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien did not hold back his thoughts on Subban’s game.

"“An individual mistake cost us the game late in the game,” Therrien said, via CBS Sports. “As a coach, I thought he could have made a better decision at the blue line and put the puck behind, and he put himself in a tough position. We play as a team, and unfortunately at the end of the game, when we don’t play as a team we could be in trouble, and this is what happens.”"

Here’s a video of the play in question:

Was it an unfortunate turnover for Subban? Absolutely. However, his team was still in position to stop the goal from happening. Michel Therrien is wrong in calling out Subban. The turnover in itself wasn’t that bad. He simply fell down while skating and it was likely something that Subban had little to no control over. Montreal had three guys in position to stop the rush and they couldn’t. Whose fault is that? Certainly not Subban’s.

Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin has defended Therrien to this point. However, calling out a leader like Subban likely won’t sit well with the rest of the team. At what point does Michel Therrien start doing more harm than good even for a tanking team?
