Marseille and Athletic Club are having rather poor domestic years, but that’s all out the window in the Europa League. Here is where to watch.

Marseille has not had a continuation of their successes last year. Domestically, they sit 11th in Ligue 1. That puts them as one of the farthest clubs in their respective domestic tables. But nothing about their table position domestically can interfere with their Europa League pursuits.

That being said, the French side was unable to win their group. They came in second place under SC Braga. But this is the Europa League knockout stages, so consider it a fresh start. They will be hoping that Michy Batshuayi can continue his fantastic season, having scored 12 times and assisted on seven. The young Belgian is a hot commodity on the transfer market and it is easy to see why with the skills he exudes.

Athletic Bilbao are not in much better shape than their French adversaries. At least not domestically. Bilbao sit seventh in La Liga, 13 points out of fourth place. This year is certainly not going according to plan, but as mentioned earlier, this is a Europa League fresh start. Bilbao won their group, as soft as it was.

Much like Marseille are reliant on their young Belgian, Batshuayi, Bilbao are dependent on a much older striker, the 35 year old Spaniard Aduriz. He has been one of the club’s top performers all around, contributing 13 goals and four assists.

Aduriz is good at one end, but the Biblao defense has been shaky at the other end, letting in 34 goals to counter their 35 goals produced. It definitely leaves an opening for a French side desperate to prove a point.
