NFL Rumors: Antonio Gates likely staying with Chargers
By Jack Crosby
It looks as if Antonio Gates will be sticking around the the Chargers this free agency period.
The NFL free agency period is fast approaching, and one of the big names that everyone will have an eye on is San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates. The veteran tight end is scheduled to hit the open market, leading some to believe that his long tenure with the team will be coming to a close.
Well, that might not be the case after all.
According to a report from the San Diego Union Tribune, the team is scheduled to meet with agent Tom Condon at the NFL Scouting Combine, and from there a deal should be getting done sooner rather than later. More or less, Gates wants to come back and they want him to stick around, so it’s basically just getting all the formal stuff out of the way before they go forward.
Gates has been with the Chargers for 13 years and he’s been one of the most productive offensive players in the history of the organization. He struggled a bit with injuries last season, playing in just 11 games, but he still caught 56 balls for 360 yards and five touchdowns. He still has some gas in the tank and can be a viable asset as they look to rebound from what was a miserable 2015 campaign that just finished up.
The Chargers have a lot of work to do to compete within the AFC West, but they’ll more than likely have Gates around to help them get that work in.
