Denny Hamlin wins Daytona 500 2016: Official results from Daytona
Here are the official results from Sunday’s 2016 Daytona 500.
The 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup season officially began on Sunday, and what a thrilling start to the season it was. Rookie driver came Chase Elliott into the race as the pole sitter in the No. 24, but it was not to be for Elliott early on in the race.
While Elliott dropped back in the middle of the pack, he tried to go three-wide on the track and it caused Carl Edwards to get behind him and it caused Elliott to lose control of his car and hit the grass of the tri-oval, which ended up wrecking his car.
His teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. looked primed to dominate from there, but he quickly fell back with the Toyotas of Joe Gibbs Racing working their way to the front and dominating as one cohesive unit. The three cars of Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth fended off other drivers for a majority of the race, as Hamlin ran out in front for most of the day.
In the end, it was a photo finish at the line, as Hamlin made a move to get back in front and hold off Martin Truex Jr. for a thrilling win at Daytona. It ended up being the closest finish in the history of the Daytona 500.
