Results and full highlights from AJ Styles vs Chris Jericho at WWE Fastlane 2016
Ever since AJ Styles made his triumphant debut in WWE at the Royal Rumble, he’s only been getting more and more hype. However, he’s also been locked in a series of singles matches with WWE legend Chris Jericho. With each superstar having a victory to their credit, they were ready to settle the score at WWE Fastlane 2016 in Styles first singles pay-per-view match.
Styles and Jericho began the match searching for any kind of opening to take the upper hand as they exchanged different roll-up attempts, counters, and both looked to hit their respective submission finishing maneuvers. This continued for quite some time as the back-and-forth action, but AJ finally got a bit of an edge with a huge dropkick:
However, Styles’ control of the match didn’t last long at all as Y2J launched Styles high in the air with a counter and sent him crashing to the mat before sending him crashing again, this time to the outside. On the floor, Jericho continued to beat him down before rolling him back into the ring and keeping the pressure on with a crossbody:
Styles got Jericho falling to the outside, though, and though about going to the high-risk bag of tricks with an over-the-top-rope dive. However, that turned out to be a bad move as Y2J caught him with a huge dropkick of his own:
Jericho took advantage of that after catching his breath, though, and took the action back into the ring—but The Phenomenal One wouldn’t be held down for too long as he caught the WWE veteran with some strikes and then an incredible DDT:
AJ then tried to lock in the arms to hit the Styles Clash, but Jericho reversed it into an attempt at The Walls of Jericho. Styles reversed that, though, and hit a mean facebuster, but Jericho wouldn’t be down long from that either. This ultimately led to Y2J connecting with a Lionsault:
When Styles got his wits about him to avoid a Superplex, he then tried to hit Jericho with his springboard forearm, but his opponent countered with a nifty kick to the rope to bring AJ tumbling down:
Styles continued to show his grit, though, fighting back and hitting a Pele Kicksto get Jericho in a compromising position on the top turnbuckle:
But Y2J fought back there. Back on the mat after jumping down with AJ in his grasp, Jericho locked in the Walls, but Styles was able to get to the ropes. Jericho lost his cool a bit and sent AJ to the outside in a brutal manner:
However, Styles wouldn’t be denied back in the ring, even withstanding a Codebreaker. He fought back and countered a move by Jericho to lock in and hit the Styles Clash. When Jericho kicked out, though, Styles locked in the Calf Crusher:
Jericho fought but had to tap out, giving Styles is first PPV singles win. After eating the loss, Y2J teased attacking AJ, but ultimately shook his hand as a show of respect.
