Carson Wentz will be one of the first players drafted in the 2016 NFL Draft, but does he have an Andrew Luck ceiling?
Carson Wentz of the North Dakota State Bison is one of two, possibly four franchise quarterbacks available in the 2016 NFL Draft. Many expect Wentz to be either the first or the second pro style passer to be off the board in this spring’s draft. There’s almost no way he makes it past the San Francisco 49ers at No. 7.
Scouts love Wentz’s arm strength, size, mobility, and his ability to lead one of college football’s strongest programs at any level. While Wentz is a sure-fire franchise caliber passer in the 2016 NFL Draft, does he have an Andrew Luck type of ceiling as one top NFL Draft evaluator believes?
According to the NFL Network’s Mike Mayock, he believes that Wentz does compare favorably to Luck, as the have similar ceilings.
Mayock: Carson Wentz has ceiling similar to Andrew Luck

While it’s no doubt that the two quarterbacks have similar physical traits and effectiveness on tape, that is a bold comparison for Mayock to make. Luck came out of Stanford University as the No. 1 draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2012 NFL Draft. Luck was considered to be the best quarterback prospect since John Elway of the Denver Broncos, also a Stanford alum.
Not to say that Wentz can’t become an elite quarterback in the NFL, but he didn’t play in the Power 5 nor did he finish in second place in consecutive Heisman Trophy Award races like Luck did in 2010 and 2011.
What Wentz does have in his favor is that he is the type of quarterback that can succeed really in any system or situation with his obvious physical and leadership traits. The consensus is that all the scouts love what Wentz brings to the table, but is he really in the same category as Luck? That’ll be determined on Sunday afternoons for the next three to five years with whatever team ends up drafting Wentz out of North Dakota State.
