The Washington Capitals have acquired defenseman Mike Weber from the Sabres

The Washington Capitals were looking to increase their defense depth due to their recent blue line injuries. While all their defensemen are healthy, the Caps were looking for depth to provide insurance. They have found precisely that by trading their 2017 third round pick to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for defenseman Mike Weber.

Mike Weber would not have fit on the Capitals roster due to their salary cap concerns under normal circumstances so the Sabres took on half of his remaining cap hit. Considering that the San Jose Sharks just traded a second round pick for Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Roman Polak, getting Weber for a third rounder is about right.

Weber will most likely not play much for the Capitals if all goes well. If all does not go well, Weber provides the Capitals with a solid right-handed option. With Weber and Taylor Chorney, the Capitals have both a left-handed option (Chorney) and a right-handed option in case of injury.

Weber has five points (one goal and four assists) this season in 35 games for the Sabres. He provides the Eastern Conference leading Capitals with a physical option to complement the puck movers on their blue line.
