What is the 2016 NFL salary cap?
The 2016 NFL salary cap will once again see a bump from the current number. Last year, the cap number was $143.8 million, helping teams to fit more susperstar players under the cap. With the explosion in league-wide revenue over the past 10 years, we have the seen the cap soar to unprecedented heights.
Most are projecting that this year’s cap will be between $155 and $157 million, showing an increase of the typical $8-10 million per year uptick. The teams that would benefit the most from this increase are the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and New Orleans Saints. All three are very close to the cap threshold for 2016 already, with the $155 million projection being the benchmark.
The other winners? The players. More money available means teams are going to be spending in free agency, easily doling out more than a billion dollars in collective salaries. Of course, the main thing to keep an eye on is the guaranteed money, which is really the only tangible number in NFL contracts. If it’s not guaranteed, there is a good chance the player never sees that money.
Unrestricted free agency begins on March 9. Expect cash to be flying out of 32 buildings that day.
