Sitting atop the Eredivisie table, PSV were picked out of a group that was pretty evenly matched in the Champions League group stages. They slid into second place, just behind Wolfsburg and just ahead of Manchester United to push into knockout stage play.

However, In the process of beating CSKA Moscow and nabbing that crucial second place, they had captain and leading goal-scorer Luuk de Jong pick up a crucial yellow card that will see him miss the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 clash with one of the best defenses in the world.

This is one of those suspensions that could affect the way the game is played because PSV rely so heavily on de Jong to produce goal. They would have been underdogs with him, but without him, they are serious underdogs. Atletico have surrendered just 11 goals on the year in 25 appearances.

Yes, it is true that Atletico’s defense will be their primary weapon against a de-Jong-less PSV side, but that does not mean that this will be a drab 0-0 affair in the Netherlands (although it very well could be). Spain’s third wheel still have the likes of Antoine Griezmann contributing to the attack and even despite his recent dry spell, he still has as many goals as Luuk de Jong, there have just been far less goals around him.

The Colchoneros will be relying on the midfield antics of Koke as well as they look to dent the hopes of PSV when they turn around and bring the second leg back to Spain.
