Giannis Antetokounmpo’s mom is a Kobe Bryant fan
By Dan Favale
Giannis Antetokounmpo is an awesome human being.
And his mom seems just as awesome.
Reddit user TheBoyWhoCriedShark translated an interview with the Milwaukee Bucks’ wunderkind from Greek to English (h/t HoopsHype). The exchange took place sometime after the Bucks’ 108-101 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 22, with Antetokounmpo detailing just how much his mom wanted to meet Kobe Bryant:
"You went rushing out of the locker rooms. You took your mother , father and brothers to the Laker’s Locker Room, coach Kidd was also there, and wanted to talk to Kobe. What happened there ?My mother was driving me crazy. she wanted a photo. She already told me a week ago: «If I don’t get a photo with Kobe, I will kick your a**». I told her not to worry». She sent me 15 SMS. After the end of the match I found her SMS from half time and after then end of the match ! I told myself , she has to take the picture ! I took them to the locker room we found Kobe and took the picture. He (Kobe) is a great guy. What did your mother tell Kobe? She said thank you. She was wearing his Jersey, it is the first time she wasn’t wearing mine!"
Well, this is just spectacular.
It’s one thing to hear about Stephen Curry getting Kobe to autograph his jersey, or Bryant hooking up LeBron James with a pair of his signature shoes. It’s another thing entirely to imagine the Antetokounmpo clan making a beeline for the Lakers locker room just so Mama Antetokounmpo, clad in a Kobe jersey, could meet one of the greatest shooting guards of all time.
That sight must have been surreal, perhaps even a bit awkward. Props to Kobe for leaving what appears to be a lasting, and positive, impression.
And good on Giannis for granting his mother’s wish, if only so he could avoid a parental butt-kicking.
