The Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly shut down forward James van Riemsdyk for the rest of the regular season

The Toronto Maple Leafs were hoping to get forward James van Riemsdyk back before the trade deadline, or at least sometime in March. Toronto has reportedly decided to shut him down for the rest of the season after his rehab from his broken foot that has kept him out of action since early January didn’t go as well as expected.

This is best for both parties. Rushing James van Riemsdyk back would make no sense for Toronto. If he injured his foot again, that could be a long-term injury. Plus the Leafs are not a competitive team. Why rush someone back if you won’t be competitive? The Leafs forward should be ready to go by the time Toronto opens up their training camp.

JVR was in the midst of an excellent season before his injury. He had 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points with a plus-minus rating of +3. The Leafs wing also had 129 shots on goal while averaging 17:49 of ice time per game. Toronto has to be very encouraged by how much he improved this season in terms of his overall game. He looked much better defensively and was quite productive on offense.
