Dwight Howard has decided not only will he exercise his player option to become a free agent this summer, but has now reportedly fired his agent, too.

On Friday morning, Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard issued a statement to USA Today’s Sam Amick about his decision to fire his agent, Dan Fegan, ultimately severing ties with Relativity Sports in the final months before opting of his deal with the Rockets to become a free agent.

Howard is 30 years old and past his physical prime, trying desperately to get one last payday before he becomes an out-of-date player in the league as a back-to-the-basket center with an undefined offensive game in a league becoming increasingly perimeter centric.

While deciding to opt out of his Rockets deal to potentially make more money is probably the genesis of his logic, perhaps it has more to do with the acrimonious relationship he has with star shooting guard James Harden, both of whom reportedly tried to get the other traded two years ago and this NBA Trade Deadline.

The trouble of the struggling Rockets has been arguably the most massively disappointing part of the 2015-16 NBA season. Houston was in the Western Conference Finals in 2015 — now they have fired head coach Kevin McHale and are probably on the outside looking in at the NBA Playoffs this spring.

Deciding to publicly announce his intentions to opt out of his Rockets contract this summer was a head-scratching move in its own right, but now deciding to part ways with his agent on what is now perceived as an expiring deal is very concerning for Howard heading into 2016 NBA Free Agency.

Unless he knows who his new agent will be and already has a list of suitors lining up for his services next season, what is Howard doing? He’s probably costing himself more money than he can understand with all of his decisions and antics stemming from this season.
