Pete Carroll is entering the final year of his current contract with the Seattle Seahawks, so naturally both sides are working towards an extension.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, the Seattle Seahawks are working with head coach Pete Carroll on coming to a contract extension.

Carroll has led the Seahawks to two NFC Championships and the franchise’s lone Lombardi Trophy to date in 2013. He enters the final year of his current deal with the Seahawks.

Since heading to the Pacific Northwest in 2010 after a wildly successful stint with the USC Trojans in the then Pac-10, Carroll has gone 60-36 as the head coach of the Seahawks, leading Seattle to the NFC Playoffs five times in six seasons.

During his time with Seattle, the NFC West has been transformed from a doormat division in the NFL to arguably the league’s toughest in the last few seasons. The NFC West routinely sends two teams to the NFC Playoffs and Seattle is often one of those two teams.

Carroll has won his division three times (2010, 2013-14) and guided the Seahawks to their second and third trips to the Super Bowl in 2013 and 2014. While Carroll has been immensely successful with the Seahawks in the last six seasons, now that former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin resigned after the 2015 NFL season, Carroll is now the oldest head coach in the National Football League at 64 years old.

Owner Paul Allen and general manager John Schneider may have loved everything Carroll has done for their franchise in the last half decade, but the Seahawks’ brass do need to keep in mind that though Carroll has a high-energy level as their head coach, he will turn 65 on September 15th.

While he certainly deserves an extension for his work with Seattle the last few years, Carroll’s age will play a factor in contract negotiations one way or another.
