Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expects quarterback Tony Romo to play for the next ‘four or five years’ in Dallas.
Tony Romo is the engine that makes things run in Dallas. As Romo goes, so do the Dallas Cowboys. In 2015, Romo was sidelined for a majority of the season after fracturing his clavicle and the Cowboys wound up with one of the worst records in the NFL.
The good news for the Cowboys is that they’re unlike the other teams with a high pick in the draft and they should have the added benefit of adding some good draft choices and getting Romo back to make a run at the NFC in 2016. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has always instilled his faith in Romo and he continues to do so.
Speaking in an interview on his luxury bus, Jones said via ESPN’s Todd Archer, that he sees Romo being the team’s quarterback for the next four to five years.
“What is the one unequivocable fact that you can count on relative to the preparation of this draft and on draft day is that I’m planning on Romo being the quarterback for the next four or five years,” Jones said in the interview. “That’s a fact. You won’t see a decision on draft day that will fly in the face of not believing, from our standpoint, that he’ll be our quarterback for four or five years.”
Jones’ comments tend to be a direct response to the rumors that the Cowboys could be interested in taking North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz with the No. 4 overall pick in the draft and making him Romo’s successor. However, based on his comments, it seems like the team will not be going in that direction.
Instead, the team might be better off going with a potential young superstar in a Joey Bosa or a Jalen Ramsey, to add another big player to their defense. The Cowboys still feel that they field one of the best teams in the NFL when Romo is healthy.
It’s clear that their mind is currently on the present. Whether or not Romo at 35 years old can play for another four or five years will remain to be seen.
