You know you’ve made it as an NBA sensation when you start fielding social media-backed prom date requests.
Related: New York Knicks rookie Kristaps Porzingis has made it.
Twitter user @Sam_Miller20 showed some elaborate initiative on Feb. 22 when she asked Porzilla to what I can only assume is her high school’s prom:
Okay I've been planning this for a while.. Serious question @kporzee Will you go to prom with me? #KnicksonMSG pic.twitter.com/tr2pl5yZT4

Much respect to Sam here. Her campaign was well-thought and, in this crazy world of frequent internet date requests, extremely creative. Back in the day, I asked someone to prom via a text. Or AIM. I can’t remember. It most definitely wasn’t this cool.
Anyway, the tweet, as you can see, gained some serious traction. The Knicks themselves even got involved:
Good luck @Sam_Miller20! pic.twitter.com/oXc9e93Y9U

The 20-year-old Porzingis, being the gentleman that he is, responded on Twitter, unfortunately bearing some bad news:

I know what you’re thinking: Proms are typically in May and June. Scorzingis has some nerve thinking that the Knickerbockers won’t be competing for an NBA title at that time. I mean, they’re a tad less than
one jillion
seven games back of the Eastern Conference’s final playoff slot. He can’t just make these international plans. This shows a complete lack of faith in his squad and is irrefutable evidence of why he will, somehow, end up being a draft bust.
(Pauses so the gullible crowd catches up to his sarcasm.)
As for Sam, there are worse ways to be let down. At least Porzingis didn’t slide into her DMs with a sad face emoji or ignore her altogether.
And if she’s still looking for an escort to prom, she can always see if Jimmer’s free.
