Rice pitcher Blake Fox had a subtle pickoff attempt against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Pickoff attempts can be a real bore sometimes. Whether it’s countless throwbacks to first base and delaying a game even further or going for a pickoff attempt on someone that isn’t a threat to steal, pickoff attempts certainly have their flaws. However, pickoff attempts can also be great and fun to watch on occasion.

Against Louisiana-Lafayette, Rice pitcher Blake Fox had one of the most subtle and cool pickoff attempts ever. As a runner stood on first, Fox decided that he needed to take his hat off and brush back his hair. Fox pulled his hand out of his glove and proceeded to take his cap off.

As everyone was watching the right hand, nobody paid attention to the left and Fox fired a bullet from the mound to first base.

Pickoff attempts really don’t get much better than that and it was a pretty clever move by Fox. Pickoff moves are no guarantee to get a runner out, which makes it imperative for pitchers to think of clever and unique ways to throw back to the first.

Fox clearly has been working on his pickoff attempts, because this move is flawless.
