The Buffalo Bills have placed the franchise tag on left tackle Cordy Glenn.

Buffalo is making sure it keeps quarterback Tyrod Taylor protected. On Tuesday, Bills general manager Doug Whaley placed the franchise tag on left tackle Cordy Glenn, ensuring that he remains in Buffalo for at least one more season, per multiple sources.

Glenn will cost $13.7 million against the 2016 salary cap, a major hit for the Bills. Going into the day, Buffalo was sitting on $479,715 in cap space, the lowest total in the league, per OverTheCap. Now, the Bills are more than $12 million over the cap and have to get under it by the start o the new league year on March 9.

To do so, look for Buffalo to part with defensive end Mario Williams, who was not thrilled with playing in Rex Ryan’s scheme last year. Cutting Williams would save the Bills $12.9 million, getting them just under the cap threshold.

Buffalo has the longest current playoff drought in the NFL, having made it last in 1999. The Bills were 9-7 in 2014 and 8-8 last year, but fell short of the AFC postseason in both instances. With the cap situation so tight, Buffalo has to do well in the draft and continue to develop from within.
